Airsoft, also at times called soft-air, are recreational outdoor sporting goods [when used as a noun] or else a sport [when used as a verb], where-in participants eliminate adversaries by by way of a virtual, non lethal airsoft gun-shots, employing spherical non-metallic pellets, called BB’s, launched via replica firearms.

Gameplay may have variations, but generally range from mock-replay of skirmishes, organized scenarios, C.Q.B., field, military simulations, or historical reenactments.

Combat and war-zone situations involve the use of military tactics. Participants generally emulate the tactical equipment used by modern military and police.

Airsoft sport is said to have originated in Japan, having gradually spread to Hong Kong and China in the 70s, followed by UK in the 1980s. They were in kit form and had to be built before you were able to fire pellets. Airsoft equipment was designed to closely emulate real guns. Most Airsoft guns are produced in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, while some are also produced in Japan, South Korea, the United States, and Canada.

A typical set of velocity limits on airsoft guns is said to be 350 fps (110 m/s) for CQB, 400 fps (120 m/s) for outdoor play, 450 fps(140 m/s) for semi-auto, and 550 fps (170 m/s) for bolt action sniper rifles, for a 0.20 g BB pellet

The maximum effective range of field-legal airsoft guns is around 100 yards (91 m). Most airsoft guns used for field play will have an effective range of around 140–220 feet, and are capable of shooting from 50 m/s (160 ft/s) to 125 m/s (410 ft/s. Airsoft guns having high muzzle velocities tend to have a longer range and accuracy.

Some countries have restrictions on airsoft guns, pertaining to the muzzle velocity and special colored parts to distinguish them from firearms. In U.S, there are restrictions in certain cities such as Chicago, Illinois and Detroit, Michigan. New Mexico, New Jersey, and Michigan, do not allow airsoft guns in publicly since they resemble real firearms, and can only be sold with a special blaze orange marking.
